About Harpers Ferry Historic Town Foundation

The Harpers Ferry Historic Town Foundation is a non-profit organization focusing on preservation and beautification of the Town of Harpers Ferry - "A Town that inspires citizens and visitors with its history, beauty, and hospitality."

Preservation of a 19th Century village in the 21st Century takes vision, cooperation, hard work and substantial financial resources. The Foundation works in concert with local government, the National Park Service, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, individuals and corporate partners to accomplish its goals:

  1. a professional organization run by volunteers
  2. preservation of at-risk historic structures in Harpers Ferry
  3. streetscape beautification
  4. support to business
  5. education about and promotion of Harpers Ferry

We cannot reach these goals without your help.

The Foundation is governed by a board of directors which formulates policies and manages the Foundation’s business. Members of the board represent the Harpers Ferry Town Council, local businesses, the Merchants Association, the National Park Service, individual citizens, and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.

The Foundation’s work is accomplished through four standing committees as well as ad hoc committees created to work on specific projects. Current efforts include:

  • publication of the Walking Guide to Upper Town Harpers Ferry
  • publication and distribution of a brochure for visitors to Harpers Ferry and a rack card for visitors’ centers
  • purchase of an at-risk property currently on the market
  • visitorship promotion through print media
  • preparation of a vision for improving the Potomac Street streetscape in Lower Town
  • planning for the Town’s role in marking the 150th anniversary of the John Brown Raid in 2009

These activities and others require help from those who appreciate Harpers Ferry for its place in American history, its scenic location, and its opportunities for recreation. We are actively looking for donors who want to preserve and enhance the quality of life in the Town be they resident, neighbor, or out-of-town visitors. These tax-deductible contributions will help to build a firm financial foundation for our organization and help it better meet the needs of the Town.

We ask for your generous donation by completing the contribution form. Please note your interest in volunteering for the Foundation. Both your time and dollars can help preserve and enhance this national treasure.
